“Juliet?” Seb’s whisper-hiss beneath her bedroom window jerks Nic’s gaze off her laptop.

“‘But soft!’” he calls. “‘What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.’” Seb clears his throat. “Probably shoulda been a red flag for ol’ Romeo. Sticking your dick in something that’ll burn it seems like a bad idea.”

“Are you crazy?” Nic throws open the second-story window and stares through the darkness. He’s in dark jeans and a black hoodie, a Boy Scout out for a midnight hike. “I’m surprised Teo didn’t shoot you on sight.”

They glance at where her brother’s camper sits angled by the barn. Teo’s not taking chances leaving his family unguarded.

“I stopped, and we chatted.” Sebastian shoves his hands in his pockets. “He said he’ll leave shooting me up to you.”

“As long as he helps get rid of the body.” Is it weird they’re joking like this? Nic leans out the window. “Did you hear Jen called off tomorrow’s brunch?”

“Smart.” Seb’s eyes drift to her chest, and Nic looks down to see her top gaping open. She’s deciding what to do about it when he speaks again. “So, no obligations ‘til the wedding Sunday evening?”

“I guess.” She trailed Jen all evening, offering help with wedding prep.

“Stop hovering. I’m fine.” Jen shoved her toward the stairs. “Go weave doilies or something if you need to feel useful. Otherwise, let’s meet again Sunday for the damn wedding.”

“So.” Seb clears his throat beneath the window. “You’re off the hook for bridesmaid duties for a day.”

“Guess so.”

He studies the drainpipe that runs to her window. “Is that your childhood bedroom?”

“You are not coming up to defile it.”

Seb taps the pipe and smiles. “You must’ve climbed down this an awful lot.”

“Twenty-three seconds.” Pride gets the best of her. “That’s my record.”

“Nice.” Seb grabs the pipe. “Not as impressive as three minutes and sixteen seconds, but context matters.”

“You are not coming up here.” It’s possible she took the screen off so he could. Still, it’s a bad idea…

“Time me.” He swings himself up. In less time than Nic needs to glance at her watch, he’s at the windowsill.

“Here.” She grabs his hand. “God, you’re a heavy beast.”

“Thanks.” He heaves himself over the edge and lands with a thud on her floor. “I used to be better than that.”

“Sneaking in women’s bedroom windows?” It shouldn’t surprise her. Who knows how many women besides the bookkeeper have sneaked him into bedrooms and offices, closets and sewing rooms—

“It won’t happen again.”

Seb blinks and gets to his feet. “We’re not talking about me scaling your drainpipe anymore, are we?” His grin goes wolfish. “More like you on my drainpipe and—”

“Control yourself, Minty Fresh.” She plops down on her bed, conscious of her breasts moving behind her thin cotton sleep tank. “You and I are not getting distracted by sex. We’ve got things to discuss.”

“Good point.” He folds his arms and leans on the wall. “Is that what you sleep in?”

“Sebastian, focus.” She sighs and pulls on a hoodie so he’ll stop staring at her breasts.
